POWER Prayers | Day 4

Welcome to Day 4 of our week of Power Prayers and Fasting!

Throughout this week, we've been looking at:

Simple. Powerful. Prayer.

If you've missed what was covered earlier in the week, it is best to catch up with those devotions using the links below before continuing today.

If you're already up to day with earlier in the week, we can jump right into looking how at how prayer is one of the greatest services we can offer to God.

It is a direct line to our Father, an act of worship and dependence that He sees and honours.

Jesus reminds us of the beautiful intimacy of prayer in Matthew 6:6:

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Our private devotion is a powerful service that God rewards. With that understanding, tonight we are turning our focus to a specific instruction God gives us: praying for our leaders.

The Apostle Paul gives us a clear and urgent command in 1 Timothy 2:1–2:

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

Let's break down what this powerful instruction means for us today.

The Four Pillars of Prayer

Paul outlines a comprehensive approach to prayer that outlines four specific ways in which we should pray.

  • Petitions: These are specific requests for needs, whether for our nation (like finances or health) or for the personal needs of our leaders.

  • Prayers: This is about showing reverence and worship to God, acknowledging His sovereignty over our nation and its leadership.

  • Intercession: We are called to stand in the gap for our leaders. Some may not pray for themselves, and all face immense challenges, both spiritual and practical.

  • Thanksgiving: We must cultivate a heart of gratitude, thanking God for the leaders He has put in place and for the nation we are a part of.

The Subjects of Our Prayer

The instruction is broad and applies to a range of people, but also specifically mentions those we don't often think of: our leaders.

  • All people: Our prayers should have a wide scope.

  • Kings and all those in authority: This directly refers to our political and civic leaders—presidents, ministers, members of parliament, mayors, and all those in positions of leadership.

The Desired Outcome

Why do we pray this way? Paul tells us the reward is for us all: that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Our prayers for our leaders have a direct impact on the spiritual and social climate of our nation.

With this in mind, let's pray for our Nation and it's leaders while keeping in mind Psalm 33:10-11, which says:

“The LORD frustrates the purposes of the nations; he keeps them from carrying out their plans. But his plans endure forever; his purposes last eternally.”

PRAYER POINTS:

  • For our country's leaders.

  • That God may raise leaders with a servant heart to serve the nation with integrity.

  • Pray that God will frustrate the evil plans Satan has against our nation

  • That God may put the Daniels and Josephs in our arms of government (the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary)

  • Let us pray for peace in our country

Next, let's pray for our leaders in church. 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 says:

letters spelling out the word pray on a grunge sand colored background

“...pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honoured... And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people...”

PRAYER POINTS:

  • Pray for their personal walk with Jesus

  • Pray for clarity in vision & mission of God in their ministry and the church

  • Pray that God will bless them with courage, wisdom and discernment

  • Pray for their protection against the evil one.

  • Pray that God will bless each one of them with wisdom and discernment in every decision they make.

  • Pray that God may meet their personal needs as individuals, family and as a team.

As you pray, mention each leader by name:

Pastor Gareth, Pastor Christie, Pastor Jade, Pastor Shepard, Dani, Dominique, Arina, Miklos, Tinyiko, Musa

Other leaders in our church family that need pray are our dedicated youth ministry elders, who serve not only within their ministry but in various places within the church. Pray also for them by name:

Nyikiwe, Tumelo, Ntando, Otha, Jaden, McLaren, Vicky, Alvin
